Handedness: Right
Jean-Luc Foudy is another one of the top prospects eligible for the 2020 NHL draft. He’s a highly skilled winger who loves to use his speed throughout the ice and especially in the offensive zone. He’s a creative player who is extremely fun to watch. This season with the Windsor Spitfires, he put up 43 points in 59 games. If you recognize the Foudy last name, his brother is London Knights forward and Columbus Blue Jackets prospect, Liam Foudy.
Offensive Abilities
Jean-Luc Foudy is a highly skilled forward who plays for the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL. Although he’s undersized, that doesn’t stop him from being an effective player when he’s on the ice. Foudy displays very good skating, good playmaking, good stickhandling, a somewhat underrated shot, and questionable IQ at certain points of the game. His very good skating is most likely the first thing that jumps out to you when you watch him. He displays very good speed when he carries the puck. He's relied upon by his team to carry the puck up the ice when they’re on the powerplay. When Foudy enters the offensive zone, this is where his magic starts. He can use his speed to drive to the net and generate scoring chances or he will use his playmaking ability to pass to players to generate scoring opportunities. One thing that makes me frustrated when I watch him is that he can hold onto the puck for way too long. When he’s in the offensive zone, he’ll be zooming around and he’ll clearly have a shooting lane open, but instead, he likes to hold onto the puck and try and pass to a teammate instead. But if a defender blocks him off, it’ll be hard for him to get the puck back because he’s a smaller player. And what's even more frustrating is that his shot is actually decent. Trevor Letowski (Head Coach of the Spitfires) should teach him that he always doesn’t need to pass the puck. He can always shoot the puck on the net. Because who knows, if he shoots the puck more, maybe he can get more goals to help his team on the scoreboard and increase his point total. If you put Foudy with high offensive players like Egor Afanasyev, Tyler Angle or even Wyatt Johnston, it could do wonders for his development and help him to get more points for his team.
Defensive Abilities
I’ll just say it plain and simple. You probably don’t wanna draft Foudy for his defensive game. When he’s trying to defend in his own end, he’s mostly just floating around waiting for someone to pass him the puck. He should be more active in and around his own net by trying to lift sticks, and shoot the puck around the boards. Foudy isn’t the greatest guy to take faceoffs for your team. He only won faceoffs about 41% of the time. Foudy was placed on the penalty kill in the midway mark of the season to help with adding more speed.
Projection and Comparison
I personally see Foudy as more of a winger and not a centre. I see him more as a winger because wingers should be the ones who are driving play up the ice and going to the net. He also isn’t the greatest player in the faceoff dot and can’t participate as much as you want a centre to in his own end. Due to his raw skill and potential however, maybe a team that can afford to take a risk on him will due so late in the first round of the 2020 NHL draft. If everything turns out correctly, Jean-Luc Foudy will be an extremely exciting player to watch whenever he gets to the NHL. His game compares to Mitch Marner due to their speed, playmaking ability and lack of size.
